# When the GPU isn't an NVIDIA

The whole LLM stack assumes CUDA. The GPU in front of you is often an Intel iGPU or a CPU. Getting a real, low-latency autoregressive TTS to stream there means rebuilding the parts you usually pip-install — the decode loop, the KV cache, the batching scheduler — on OpenVINO.

The baseline assumption of modern AI deployment is a PCIe-attached NVIDIA accelerator. We rely on CUDA graphs, FlashAttention, and vLLM continuous batching to mask the hostile physics of autoregressive decoding. But when the target hardware is an Intel iGPU or an Arc card on a consumer edge device, the entire stack evaporates. I rebuilt the inference engine for `qwen3-tts-openvino` directly on top of OpenVINO C++ APIs to achieve true low-latency streaming without CUDA.

## The missing primitives

When you step off NVIDIA, you lose the battle-tested memory management primitives. [FlashAttention (Dao et al., 2022)](https://arxiv.org/abs/2205.14135) avoids materializing the $O(n^2)$ attention matrix in high-bandwidth memory by tiling in SRAM. Without it, you eat raw memory bandwidth on every attention layer. You lose CUDA graphs, meaning you pay driver launch overheads for every kernel across every token. You lose PagedAttention, meaning you default to padded tensors and catastrophic internal memory fragmentation. 

You cannot simply export an ONNX graph and expect 12 Hz multi-codebook TTS to stream. The system requires an active KV cache manager, an online batching scheduler, and a chunked neural codec pipeline operating in real-time.

## The bandwidth wall

Autoregressive inference generates tokens sequentially. For each token, the hardware must read the entire model weight matrix and the growing KV cache. The limiting metric is arithmetic intensity:

For a forward pass with $N$ parameters and $b$ bytes per parameter, yielding a single token requires $\approx 2N$ FLOPs. Thus, $I \approx 2/b$. For fp16, this is roughly 1 FLOP per byte. Modern hardware has a theoretical ridge point in the tens to hundreds of FLOPs per byte. Because $I$ is so low, the compute cores starve while waiting for the memory bus. You are entirely memory-bandwidth bound. 

The physical time floor for a single token generation is bounded by:

This equation drove every engineering choice I made in the runtime. I implemented INT8 weight quantization (`int8_sym`) to drop $b$ from 2 to 1. I quantized the KV cache to U8 to shrink the scaling context term.

## Hardware layout and caching

OpenVINO provides the graph compiler and the device abstractions (`ov.Core`). In [`qwen3_tts_ov/runtime.py`](https://github.com/wangtong10086/qwen3-tts-openvino/blob/main/qwen3_tts_ov/runtime.py), the `compile_model` wrapper detects the device topology. If it finds a GPU, it enforces `GPU_ENABLE_LARGE_ALLOCATIONS` to bypass default driver caps.

Because OpenVINO compiles the JIT payload on first use, the initial startup incurs a massive JIT penalty. I built an aggressive cache-warmup routine that triggers dummy compilation passes immediately on boot, ensuring the first actual WebSocket request hits a hot cache.

## Real-Time Factor

The operational threshold for the entire pipeline is the Real-Time Factor (RTF):

To stream 12 Hz frames without buffer underruns, $\text{RTF}$ must strictly be $< 1$. At 12 Hz, the absolute budget is $\approx 83\,\text{ms}$ per frame. This budget must encompass the Talker AR step, the greedy subcode generation, and the stream decoder chunk. Rebuilding the continuous batcher directly on the OpenVINO C++ bindings was the only way to squeeze the inference loop tight enough to clear that $83\,\text{ms}$ window under concurrent load. 

When you don't have vLLM to hide the complexity, you are forced to confront the mechanical reality of your hardware. I mapped the tensor memory boundaries, bypassed Python thread locks, and bound the decoder to the NPU. The resulting engine doesn't just run on edge devices; it dominates them.
